Post-Conversion Tasks

Documenting the Conversion Automatically

Data mapping specifications are needed to perform conversions.  Upon the completion of the conversion, most companies require a set of documentation that shows exactly how the conversion was performed.  With the Gladstone methodology, when the conversion is done, the documentation is done simultaneously.  All the client has to do is simply print the data mapping specifications.

Validating Data Mapping via the Prove Report

The Prove report verifies that the data has been moved without being compromised.  The report was developed during an actual conversion in which the client had allocated six months for the validation of one application.  The major reason that so much time had been allocated was due to the complexity.  For example, just one data element had a specification (in table format) that consisted of six input decisions fields and convered about four-hundred of the possible permutations of the six fields.  The Gladstone Prove report, driven by the actual contents of the target data, provides 100% validation of the specification rules instead of just spot checking.  On the conversion project mentioned above, it reduced the amount of validation time from six months to two weeks.

Validating Before and After via Master File Display

The Master File Display is a report that provides a formatted listing of each field’s contents for all fields present in a record.  It is a convenient overview of all the information pertinent to that record and may be used at any time during the conversion process to compare an input record with the corresponding output record.  The formatted report makes a “before and after” comparison of a given record on a field-to-field basis.  In the cases of dates, the process allows the client to compare expanded versus non-expanded dates or aged dates versus non-aged dates.  Occasionally a client will want a Master File Display on all files just before the data conversion to archive for audit history.

The Master File Display

a)  Provides a formatted listing of each field in a record
b)  Allows a field-to-field comparison of source and target data
c)  Provides an audit history

Finding Out-of-Range Data

A special feature of the Gladstone Data Integrity processing allows clients to easily determine which values in the data are out of range.  A comprehensive report shows all values found, and the client’s staff determines which ones are valid. Frequently, auditors like to use this function routinely on major production lines as a cross check against bad data getting past their business applications’ validation routines.
